Satellite TV Requirements
There are a few technical requirements that your home or site needs to fulfill before you can install a satellite TV system. For the most part, they are simple and can be easily met. Nevertheless, you do need to know about them before you place your order for a Satellite TV system. The questions to be asked are:
Can the satellite TV system be fitted in your home?
As we have already discussed, satellite TV uses a small dish antenna to look at a geo-synchronous satellite in space 36,000 km away. Now this satellite is hovering somewhere close to the equator, which means that if you live in the continental US you need the antenna to look south.
Of course, the installation engineer of satellite TV service provider will set the exact alignment, but you do need to ensure that the southern sky is visible from your roof or yard. If you live way up North - say in Alaska , you will need a slightly larger satellite TV dish. Your service provider would guide you on this.
Do you have the permission to erect the antenna?
Federal regulations say that you are allowed to erect an antenna in any area that is for your exclusive use - such as a balcony or a backyard (regardless of whether you own or rent your home). However, you cannot automatically erect a satellite TV antenna in a common area.
Therefore, check with your residents association in case you stay in an apartment. Similarly, you will need your landlord's permission to install a satellite TV dish antenna in case you stay in rented premises.
What wiring does your home have currently?
Many homes are now wired with the RG - 6 coaxial cable. If yours is one, then the satellite TV system can use this wiring straightaway and no additional work is required. However, if you have the older cable, it will not be able to handle the higher demands of satellite TV and a new cable will have to be laid.
How many TVs can the system connect?
For the first time we come against a specification where cable TV offers a greater capability. You can connect more than one TV to your satellite TV system but all TVs will be forced to show whichever channel has been selected on the receiver. You will also lose stereo sound. Satellite TV service providers get around this limitation by offering you more than one receiver unit at a reduced cost.
As is obvious, fixing a satellite TV to your home is no big deal if you have a reasonably clear view of the southern sky. Landlord or resident association permission is a different issue but needs to be cleared up before you place an order for a satellite TV package for your home.
