Satellite TV functioning - A sky-high technology
The Satellite TV works based on the signals, it receives from the man-made satellite that moves around an orbit called geo-synchro. The speed of the satellite in the orbit is tuned to match with that of the earth, making its position constant with respect to the earth.
The satellite TV service providers send their programs through a beam in encrypted form and send them to their own satellites, which in turn amplifies it and return it to earth to be received by the dishes put up by consumers on their rooftops.
Requirement - Down-to-earth
What you need to have is a Satellite Dish TV antenna, a satellite receiver and the access cards and of course enough space on your house roof to place a Dish antenna.
Cable TV - No match
The popularity of Cable TV is fast diminishing with the introduction of Satellite TV. Besides offering a big price advantage, satellite TV provides value added services like program recording and the facility to see the missed part of live telecast that you missed in receiving your phone call etc.
The quality of the picture, sound reception and the speed of the internet are also much better in the case of Satellite TV.
Satellite TV services Providers - Too few too good
Although a number of Satellite TV service providers have entered the scene in the United States, only two players that is Direct TV and Dish Network, have been able to carve a niche for themselves. The two companies control most of Satellite TV business in the U.S. at present.
While Direct TV boasts of being the pioneer in the field, Dish Network offers a wider choice of channels. Direct TV, keeping in view the interest of sports buffs, has entered into some exclusive deals with Sports channels while foreign language programming is the forte of Dish Network.
Unlike Dish Network, Direct TV does not insist on the sale of its own hardware to the customers. Though this is a customer-friendly move, it sometimes gets overshadowed by the compatibility issue.

Dish Network in contrast provides all the required hardware at your doorstep which can be free of cost if you take a certain package. If you are crazy about the quality of picture & sound, in other words, High Definition TV is your choice, go for the Dish Network.
There is no marked difference between the quality of the services, the prices charged and the reception quality offered by the two Satellite TV Service providers. However, you can decide as to whose services to buy after comparing the quality of services provided by both of them in your area.
